India Incentives For Solar Power

December 28th, 2011

When I first read about this, I couldn’t help but think ‘It’s about time!’ I know there are companies that give people a pat on the back for helping the environment but I really like how India has decided to go about it.

For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, I’m going to catch you up to speed. The renewable energy ministry in India is planning on giving more incentives in order to help increase the manufacturing of solar powered equipments.

At a recent conference, A.N. Srivastava; director of the federal solar program at the ministry, mentioned that during a certain year (our guess would be 2012 or 2013), when investments by companies in the solar sector reaches a certain amount (which is yet to be decided), there are going to be great rewards. Now, these rewards have not yet been discussed and we’re not 100% sure on if any agreements have been made at this time.

India’s solar power program plans to add 20,000 megawatts of solar power capability to their grid by the year 2020. On top of that, the ministry wants to have between 4,000 and 5,000 MW of solar equipment manufactured by 2022.

I don’t know about you, but I think this is going to get many other places around the world stepping up and offering rewards for solar power goals reached.
